It depends on the specific MCP setup. With Claude Desktop that I’m using, there are several safety mechanisms in place:
For each different action, you’ll receive a prompt asking for permission before anything happens. This gives you control over what the AI can actually execute.
Regarding file system access, you can limit permissions to only read/write within specific folders, keeping the rest of your system secure.
For GitHub integration, you can create a token with limited scope permissions if you’re concerned about access levels.
For Jira, the AI will have the same permissions as your user account. A well-crafted prompt helps ensure accurate actions, and I’ve found it rarely makes mistakes.
These protections give you good control over what the AI can do. The permission prompts are particularly helpful as they let you review each action before it’s taken.
